Underworld Journeys

Groups and workshops for times of transition, loss, and becoming

Answering the Call to Change

There are seasons in life when something old is ending, but what comes next has not yet fully emerged. A relationship changes, a role falls away, a loss reshapes us, or a long-held identity no longer fits. We may feel lost, uncertain, or suspended between who we have been and who we are becoming.

Across cultures and throughout history, these threshold experiences have often been understood as journeys into the underworld—not places of punishment, but places of transformation.

What is the Underworld?

Psychologically, the underworld can be understood as the deeper layers of the psyche that lie beneath our familiar roles, routines, and identities.

It is here that we encounter grief, loss, uncertainty, and the parts of ourselves we may have forgotten, neglected, or outgrown. It is also where we discover hidden strengths, untapped creativity, deeper self-knowledge, and new possibilities for living. What is found in the underworld is not only what has been lost, but also what is waiting to be reclaimed.

Though these journeys can be challenging, they often carry the potential for profound growth and renewal. By turning toward rather than away from these experiences, we may begin to uncover a deeper sense of meaning, authenticity, and connection to ourselves and our lives.

The underworld is where we encounter not only what has been lost, but also what has been waiting for us all along.

Underworld Journeys Often Begin When…

  • A relationship ends.

  • A child leaves home.

  • A career no longer feels meaningful.

  • A loss changes the shape of your life.

  • An old identity no longer fits.

  • A longing emerges that can no longer be ignored.

  • Life asks you to let go of who you have been before you know who you are becoming.

Why Community Matters

For much of human history, life's major transitions were not navigated alone. Birth, coming of age, marriage, loss, illness, aging, and death were held within a community. These experiences were often marked by rituals and rites of passage that helped people make meaning of change and find their place within the larger story of life.

In modern culture, many of these communal structures have faded. We are often left to navigate grief, uncertainty, and transformation in isolation. Yet there is something profoundly healing about being witnessed by others who understand what it means to stand at a threshold.

Underworld Journeys offers a space where life's deeper passages can be explored in community. Together, we share stories, honor what is ending, listen for what is emerging, and remember that we do not walk these paths alone.

“To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight,
and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings,
and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings.”
